PTSD Counselling

What to Expect

Living with PTSD or complex PTSD often means your body and mind are still reacting to something that’s already over. Trauma-informed counselling gives you a steady space to work through what happened, at a pace you can actually handle, so the past has less of a grip on your present.

How sessions build over time:

When to Seek PTSD Counselling

PTSD and complex PTSD can show up differently for everyone, and it doesn’t always look like what you’d expect. If something that happened, whether a single event or an ongoing experience, still feels present in your daily life, that’s worth taking seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PTSD counselling?

PTSD counselling is support for processing the lasting effects of a difficult or overwhelming experience, whether that was a single event or something ongoing. It focuses on helping you feel steady and safe again, not just talking about what happened.

PTSD is usually connected to a specific event, while complex PTSD tends to come from repeated or prolonged experiences, like ongoing childhood harm or long-term abuse. Both are approached with similar trauma-informed care, adjusted to your specific history.

No, you don’t need a formal diagnosis to begin. Counselling does not involve diagnosing conditions. Many people reach out simply because something from their past still feels unresolved or is affecting their daily life.

Not if you don’t want to. Approaches like EMDR-informed support are designed to help you process difficult memories without needing to describe every detail out loud.

It varies depending on your history and what you’re working through, so there’s no set timeline. Some people notice a shift within the first several sessions, while deeper trauma work often unfolds over a longer period.

It’s common for some discomfort to come up as you start facing what’s been avoided, and we move at a pace that keeps this manageable. Sessions are paced carefully so you’re not left overwhelmed between visits.

The first session focuses on understanding your history and how it’s affecting you now, along with what feels safe to work on right away. It’s a conversation, not an assessment, and there’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to.

Yes, sessions are available online across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, or in person in Toronto. Many people find online sessions just as effective for trauma-informed work.

Yes, counselling sessions are confidential, with the standard legal and ethical exceptions that apply to all counselling in Ontario. This is something we can go over in more detail during your first session.
